Why Authentic UGC Outperformed a Polished Studio Ad

One campaign taught me that audiences trust imperfections more than perfection. Here’s what happened when we simplified the production process.

A wellness brand approached me wanting highly polished content with professional lighting, transitions, and scripted scenes. But after reviewing their audience behavior, I suggested something different: raw, conversational UGC filmed naturally on a phone. At first, they were hesitant. The first version looked almost “too simple.” Minimal edits. Casual talking. Natural lighting. Real reactions. But once the campaign launched, the results were undeniable. The simpler version generated significantly more engagement and lower acquisition costs than the polished ad. Why? Because audiences have become extremely good at recognizing advertisements. Overproduced content often creates emotional distance, while authentic content feels relatable and trustworthy. That doesn’t mean quality doesn’t matter. It means authenticity matters more. Now, whenever I create content for brands, I prioritize emotional connection before aesthetics. People don’t buy because something looks expensive. They buy because something feels believable.
